Late summer 2023

It's time to wind down...

I must admit I am a bit hungover this morning. We had Andrew’s birthday bash yesterday and after 8 weeks of the campsite being full to bursting I think I let off a bit too much steam.

So today has been a challenge although the campsite is much quieter now, so I have been able to find time to have a snooze this afternoon. What luxury.

There are campers on site and the glamping field is still busy so we are still ironing and changing beds.

Then comes the big pack up. All the tents will have to come down and be stored with the bedding, furniture, kitchen equipment. Oh and don’t forget the fridges.

We have 9 fridges in the accommodation, 1 in the snack shack and 2 in the office it boggles my mind how many we accumulate.

I have been reading up how to repel mice. It seems that peppermint oil is quite the thing. I will give that a try this year, We don’t want to find any holes in expensive tents when we unpack them next Easter.

We have done mega business this August. The best yet. It's been extremely hard work. We have had help from Helen who worked for us for the main months. The days of us coping by ourselves are long gone. I remember back in the early days when we cracked a bottle if we had 10 pitches busy.

There have been some great people glamping and camping this year. Really lovely families from all over Europe. We have had fun with them. Singing and dancing on Saturday nights, watching wildlife and the swallows now on their way back to warmer climes. Of course we do get many returns people who come back year after year. We have seen their children grow and flourish. It’s been sad that so many of the children were upset about Digger they had been looking forward to playing with him. One little girl burst into floods of tears. She even had a little black toy dog with white feet that she had named Digger. He was such a good campsite dog.

I have had fun in the snack shack too. People really like the burgers. One young lad told me … better than Burger King!!!! Praise indeed. Our reviews have been really good despite our facilities and ourselves being older. We have been number 1 in Finistere all season according to “Pitch Up” our booking platform.

It's hard to convey how exhausting that period is and how it just stops when everyone goes back to school and work. In France it's completely different from the UK . It's like the whole country has a collective holiday from the 15th July to the 15th August. In Brittany so much of the tourist trade is seasonal. We do well being open as long as we are from Easter till the end of September.

So now the campsite has a different feel. Gone are the families and here come the fishermen, touring couples and retired folk. Oh, and let's not forget the last group of the season Brest University students for their freshers event. Nothing like finishing the season with a bang!
